BVA'S REPRESENTATION AT WCGC
(Westmoreland County Gifted Coalition)

Photography Contest

On March 4, BVA Gifted Students participated in the Westmoreland county Gifted Coalition Photography Contest. BVA students Libby Pasquale, Keifer Szurszewski, Anna Herold, and Breanne Bachovchan were among students to garner awards.   Shown below are examples of each of the categories.

Category 1 “4 or More Legs” replaces the previous category of “Pets”.  The 4 or more legs concept allows for pets, of course, but opens up the possibilities to a broader interpretation of the leg commonality among typical pets.  Birds need to appear in pairs, chairs, tables, teams of all sorts, now fit the category.

Category 2Pan Motion” also is a slight change from the previous “Freeze Frame” category.  A less commonly employed technique of capturing action is required to qualify.  Students who take this option are willing to take on a challenging assignment that will certainly require development of a new skill set.

Category 3  Natures Display is a favorite constant in this competition that allows an endless array of possibilities for expression and/or displaying natural vistas.

Category 4A “People” too has been a staple of this competition.  These photos are typically of individuals or small groups caught in the moment of expression of any of those things people do.

Category 4B  “Self-portrait”  is a new sub-category to “People”.  The task of depicting one’s self is a distinct challenge to technique and composition skills.  The photographer is forced to plan and visualize the final product before making an exposure.

Category 5   “Fantasy” is for the photographer that has a vision for their photographic base.  Fantasy photos need to express elements that the base photo is missing and/or amend elements that are present until the overall presentation reflects the unreal.  The altered reality photograph will represent a fictionalized product regardless of how close perceived reality is approached.
