Cheerleading Requirements

Though unique in many aspects, cheerleading shares the basic prerequisite of all team sports. It requires dedication, plenty of practice, the innovation of new ideas, a coordinated team effort, sharing of team success, and pride in performance. Being a cheerleader is an honor and a privilege.

There is a physical and emotional endurance that is demanded of all cheerleaders. Cheerleaders must learn to use their time, energy, enthusiasm, spirit, and leadership in a positive manner. The reality is that it is a full time job, and it goes on all year long. A cheerleader must be dedicated and disciplined to survive the challenges. Cheerleaders have the responsibilities to represent their school well and to guide the student body toward better sportsmanship and spirit.

Some of the responsibilities include:

Cheerleading must take priority over all other activities, both in and out of school. This is extremely important because cheerleading is a year-round activity and attendance of participants is vital to squad performance.

Cheerleaders must be present and on time for practice sessions, and to home games, matches, and other cheerleading activities.

Cheerleaders are expected to faithfully abide by the rules and regulations of cheerleading: failure to do so may result in suspension or dismissal from the squad.

Cheerleaders must provide transportation home after practice sessions and to and from home games, matches, or meets.

A certain amount of financial burden is placed on those who are selected as cheerleaders. The cost of uniforms is financed by the school, but the cost of personal items such as shoes, tights, hair ribbons, wind suits, and cheer bags are financed by the individual. Additional expense may be incurred if the cheerleader chooses to attend a recommended, optional summer camp.

Certain academic grades must be maintained in order to participate in cheerleading. The Scholastic Standards outlined in the W.P.I.A.L. Rules and Regulations for high school athletics must be maintained by cheerleaders.

Cheerleading is time-consuming and does involve some expense, but cheerleaders receive many valuable and rewarding educational experiences that they will remember long after they graduate high school.
